Choosing the Right Place To Stay
It's hard to make up rules about independent lodgings, because it's their individuality
that makes them special. In general, we look for lodgings that meet these criteria:
- Owner-operated: No one gives better advice about the area
or can deal with problems quicker than a resident owner/innkeeper.
- Value: Whether you're paying $100 a night or $500, you
want to feel like you're getting your money's worth.
- Distinctiveness: Unlike motel chains that advertise "no
surprises" the best independent lodgings are a delicious balance of the
personal warmth of the innkeepers, the style and comfort of their property,
and the appeal of the setting itself.
- Appropriateness: If you want a romantic getaway, don't
select a property that caters to families; if it's a family vacation, make
sure kids are welcomed with age-appropriate facilities and activities. If
you’re traveling on business, ask about Internet connections, early
breakfasts, and usable working space.
- Personal style: Check out websites and call the innkeepers
to see if their style and yours are a good fit. Some folks love Victorian
style, others avoid it like the plague. Some travelers relish personal attention,
others cherish privacy above all. Evaluate your needs, and select accordingly.
